Re: ramps 1.4 and external stepper driver. STEP and DIR are direct connections to output pins on the CPU. Your diagram indicates they're all opto-isolated, so I think you can probably connect them as you guessed with signal and ground.it will act like the PNP controller type in the diagram.

The RAMPS 1.4 comes with 6 end stop connections (X Min, X Max, Y Min, Y Max, Z Min, Z Max). Rarely do you use all six. What you're really interested in is either the Max or Min. These are my parts: 1 x RAMPS 1.4 1 x MEGA 2560 R3 4 x A4988 driver 1 x USB kabel 4 x NEMA 17 The mechanical part is not my question. I know how to build the towers for the hot wire and I will control the hot wire separate from the CNC 4-axis electronics.

Hello all, Ive recently become interested in doing some cnc milling on my machine that uses ramps 1.4 electronics. everyone has sort of thrown things like mach3 and skeinforge at me, but im not sure where to start. as 3d printing you use the slicer to make the gcode and its very streamlined and hard to mess up or cause any damage to the machine. with milling though im not sure what to use to.
